Zcash turns 10 this week. The privacy coin was released in October 2016, long before most people were concerned about AI or quantum computers. Now, after a massive price run, it is getting attention as one of the most talked-about assets in crypto.
Zcash was built to let people send money privately. Its main tool is the shielded transaction, which hides the sender, the receiver, and the amount. Early versions were slow and hard to use. Over the years, the team fixed those issues with 10 major network upgrades.
Series of crucial updates
The first was Overwinter, which laid the groundwork for later changes. Sapling made shielded payments fast enough to work on mobile phones. Blossom cut block times in half, so payments confirmed sooner. Heartwood and Canopy improved the network and its funding.

NU5, known for the Orchard pool, removed the need for a trusted setup. This was a major step, because early users had to trust the group that created the original system. NU6 and its updates, NU6.1, NU6.2, and NU6.3, kept improving the protocol. The upgrade path now ends at Ironwood.
The price story has been just as big. On the daily ZEC/USDT chart, the coin traded between about $400 and $550 through the summer. In late August it broke higher and kept climbing, reaching close to $1,700 in late September. After that peak, the price dropped. It fell below $1,100 in mid-October, then recovered.
Dominant price performance
At the time of writing, ZEC trades near $1,308 and has pushed back above the short-term moving average. The latest daily candle is green and strong. Support is clear. The blue average near $1,200 has held the price up several times in October. The next support sits around $1,050, and a deeper one is near $820.
The RSI is near 55, which means that the market is neither overheated nor weak. Trading volume has been calm since the peak, so buyers have not yet returned in large numbers.
Why It Matters
A privacy coin with 10 years of work behind it is rare. Many projects start with big promises and fade. Zcash kept building, upgrade after upgrade, while demand for privacy kept growing as AI and data tracking became bigger concerns.
The first resistance to watch is the recent high near $1,370. A close above it may open the way back toward $1,500. If the price loses $1,200, traders may expect another test of $1,050.
Whatever the short-term move, the 10-year mark shows that Zcash has lasted and kept improving. For a project built around privacy, that is a strong record.
