Dogecoin (DOGE) Reaches Major Milestone with DogeOS Launch

The Dogecoin ecosystem has reached one of the most important technological milestones in its history. The project's official community announced the launch of the DogeOS Chikyū public testnet. Developed by the team behind the MyDoge crypto wallet, the project is an EVM-compatible L2 application layer built on ZK-rollup technology.

According to the developers, this initiative marks Dogecoin's transition from a simple means of payment to a full-fledged, programmable DeFi ecosystem.

The Dogecoin base blockchain (L1) has historically remained isolated from the decentralized application industry because of its low throughput (around 30 TPS) and lack of smart contracts. The launch of DogeOS completely changes the rules of the game.

Using zero-knowledge proofs (ZK-proofs), the new network handles heavy computations, accelerating transaction processing to approximately 300 TPS. Meanwhile, transaction security remains guaranteed by the Dogecoin base blockchain.

For infrastructure developers, the network offers full compatibility with standard Ethereum tooling: Hardhat, Foundry, EthersJS and Remix.

Why the leading meme coin needs a grown-up economy

The main economic driver behind this technological breakthrough is the decision not to issue a separate DogeOS token. DOGE itself will be the sole native gas token for paying transaction fees and deploying smart contracts within the L2 network.

As envisioned by the creators, led by MyDoge CEO Jordan Jefferson, this should put billions of dollars in capital held by long-term DOGE holders to work, unlocking real on-chain utility for them.

The project is backed by major venture capital: the developers previously raised $6.9 million in a seed round. The prominent fund Polychain Capital served as the lead investor.

With the Chikyū release, developers have full access to the technical documentation, the official bridge for transferring assets, a testnet token faucet and the L2Scan blockchain explorer.

Despite the early stage of testing, the first pilot dApps have already been deployed on the network. In the DeFi segment, the liquidity protocol Barkswap, lending platform Superposition Finance, perpetual futures platform Derps and algorithmic stablecoin USDoge have been launched. The Web3 gaming sector is represented by Doge Escape and Doxx Arcade.

The main challenge for DogeOS remains its ability to convert Dogecoin's media prominence into real liquidity after the mainnet launch, whose date is still being kept secret.
